If you are just joining in, you can catch up with my previous ORC posts here: Week 1 | Week 2| Week 3| Week 4
Last week’s One Room Challenge post was cancelled to hold space for the important things that are currently happening in our country. I think it was very necessary and I am glad that the ORC made that decision. You can find the amazing list of anti-racism resources they shared in its place HERE.
I am happy to be back for WEEK 6 to update you on everything that we have accomplished in this space the past two weeks! The name of the game this week was little (and big!) details. Lots of details that seem simple, but they have made a huge impact on the space and I am really starting to see my vision coming together.
What have we accomplished these past two weeks?
- Added the final ledge trim detail to the board & batten walls.
- Installed all of the curtains
- Framed and hung oversized vintage art
- Chandelier arrived!
- Purchased supplies for the built-in desk and *drumroll*… changed my design plans! (More on that at the end of the post)
1. Board & Batten ledge detail

In my Week 4 post I shared that the board & batten feature was about 85% completed. A couple weeks ago I added the final detail: the top ledge and the bead moulding detail. You don’t have to add this detail to board & batten, but in my opinion it totally completes the look. The 2/3 height of this board & batten gives it a fresh modern look, but I LOVE that the bead moulding brings in a traditional element that flows really well with the rest of our home and trim work.
For this detail I used these 1x2s for the ledge with this PVC bead trim underneath. You can find details for the rest of the board and batten project in my week 4 post.
2. Installed all of the curtains

Curtains and hardware:
Faux Linen panels in Oatmeal – 50W x 96L
Extra Wide Faux Linen panels in Oatmeal – 100W x 96L
83″-152″ curtain rod
47″-83″ curtain rod
Finnials
Brackets
Curtain Rings
Drapery Hooks
I am so happy I decided to go with just curtains! I absolutely love the softness and warmth curtains bring to this space while still allowing all of the natural light to pour in all day long. These ones are so beautiful and so inexpensive. The color is perfect, texture is gorgeous, and I am so impressed with the quality! You can purchase these on Amazon or directly from the company’s website halfpricedrapes.com.
3. Oversized Vintage Art

Right after we got our Frame TV in the living room I discovered the open access collections from certain museums where they offer a whole database of free downloadable art to the public. I have curated quite a collection of beautiful vintage paintings this way, and I knew that instead of spending a fortune on oversized art for the large empty wall in the dining room, I wanted to try to turn one of these beautiful vintage pieces into and oversized print.
I rummaged through my collection and immediately decided on this one. I absolutely love Frank Edwin Scott’s entire Paris series that I found through the Smithsonian’s Open Access collection. I knew this one of the Madeleine would be perfect in this space. I love the textures, and the beautiful soft neutral colors tie into this space so beautifully. It also pulls some very subtle soft blues in certain lighting which flows perfectly with the blues I plan to incorporate in this space. It is also my goal to incorporate many of the places we have traveled into art in our home and we went to Paris a few Springs ago with our sweet 2-year-old baby Stella and it was magical!
You can download the full res version of it for yourself HERE if you’d like!

Frank Edwin Scott – 1910
How did I turn a vintage painting download from a museum into gorgeous oversized art on my wall?
- I got this IKEA BJORKSTA frame, 55 x 40 in black

- I uploaded my vintage painting file to Uprinting and ordered a 56 x 41 rolled canvas print. (About an inch larger than the frame. Make sure your file size and resolution are correct. Mine came out very slightly pixelated but you can only tell when your face is right next to it and I actually think it adds to the vintage quality and painting style so I don’t mind it at all.)

- Stretch the rolled canvas into the frame and clip it in per the instructions. Make sure you have another person help you hold the canvas taut while you position the clips! I did a timelapse on this process over on my Instagram stories! You can find it in my Oversized Art highlight.

- The frame comes with mounting hardware, but since we were hanging it on the board and batten we ended up just carefully drilling two small screws into the front of the ledge and positioning the frame so the bottoms of two of the clips on the side were resting on the screws. The entire frame is super light, so this worked totally fine. I actually think I am going to get some rub n’ buff to give this frame an aged brass finish to tie in with the light fixtures and some other aged brass elements that will be incorporated into the space. Right now it just feels like a bit too much black to me.

All in, this gorgeous oversized piece of art cost about $115. $115! Art this size usually costs hundreds and hundreds of dollars (or more!) I am so happy with the way this turned out and the amount of money I saved by going it this way.
Also, I actually think I am deciding against the console table under this art that I had originally included in my design. With a tall cabinet on the adjacent wall I’m thinking it may just feel like too much furniture, and I actually really love the way this big art holds its own all by itself here.
4. Chandelier arrived!
Our big beautiful chandelier from Rejuvenation arrived and I am IN LOVE and can’t wait to show her to you in all her glory. We are in the process of getting an electrician out to wire it up for us. (There used to be a surround sound speaker directly over the table, so adding new wiring for a light fixture is a little more than we are comfortable handling ourselves.) But that is going to be the showstopper in this space and I can hardly wait!
5. Bought supplies for the built-in desk / BILLY bookshelf hack
Well, most of them. A couple of the pieces we need were out of stock at IKEA, so we’ll have to make another trip for those/ (I promise, IKEA is not sponsoring this project. Ha! But you know, there are places to splurge (hi chandelier!) and places to save and there are lots of things like curtain hardware and other accessories that are a HUGE save at IKEA and other things that are so easy to customize and make your own like the frame and the shelves.
Anyways. Remember how I said my plans changed? I was building one of the bookshelves and put it in position just to scope it out and bam, it hit me!
Quick reminder of my original design:

A couple of things had already changed like using the thinner bookshelves and adding a drawer unit in the middle as the base of the desk. But as I was sliding the backing of one of the bookshelves into position it hit me. What if I don’t add the backs to the bookshelves and instead I install vertical shiplap to this whole wall? AND paint it blue! Yep! So that’s what we are doing and I am really excited about how much this will add to the design. So I am on the hunt for the perfect blue / gray and we will be using the majority of this next week to work on this project. Eek! This is the part I have been putting off but also looking forward to the most and I can’t wait to see it come to life!
But first I need to clear out my “staging area” AKA dumping zone. oops! At least this photo will make the “after” photo even more pleasing?

Ok, now I need to leave you with another pretty photo after that train wreck I just showed you.

That’s better.
