I can’t believe we made it! The dining room is FINISHED and I am coming in hot in the final hours of reveal week for the One Room Challenge. If you missed any of the previous weeks, you can catch up here:
Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3 | Week 4 | Week 6 | Week 7
This room makeover has been anything but easy. It has been challenging, exhausting, and I have poured literal blood, sweat, and tears into this space over the past 8 weeks. I pushed myself to learn new skills and attempt projects far more challenging than any I have tackled before. For 8 weeks I nailed boards into the walls whenever my husband or unsuspecting family volunteered to hang out with the kids. I painted during nap times, and stayed up way too late most nights steaming curtains and finalizing all of the little details.
I had a vision for this space, and as I stand back and admire the final result, it is so much better than I imagined it and I am just feeling really proud of the work we put in to make this space both beautiful and functional for our family. Worth every single second (and all of the days I went out in public with paint in my hair)! I am so excited to not only have our dining room back and not have to cram around the kitchen island for meals anymore, but to actually have a beautiful space that reflects us where we can enjoy quality time around the table with family and friends. I am also so happy to finally have to have this little bonus office space in the middle of our home where I can sit to do design work, my daughter can do arts & crafts, and as our children grow, a special space for them to sit and do homework.
Let’s take a trip down memory lane to remind you what this space looked like 8 weeks ago (spoiler alert: it was boring as heck.)
Before:
And now:
Main Dining Area
Built-in desk nook
This entire built-in desk is an IKEA hack. All of the structural elements are IKEA pieces including the bookshelves, drawer unit, and counter top. We painted and framed everything in to make this random nook that was previously just wasted space in our dining room function for our family. I will have am in-depth tutorial with all of the products we used and a full step-by-step of the process coming soon, so stay tuned for that!
Paint Colors
Built-ins: Boothbay Gray by Benjamin Moore
Vintage hutch: Flint by Benjamin Moore
Moulding & Trim: Pure White by Sherwin Williams
Walls: Alabaster by Sherwin Williams
French Doors: Tricorn Black from Sherwin Williams
Completed Project checklist:
This is everything we did on our own in this space. I did all of the designing, measuring, painting, and most of the install and my sweet husband made most of the cuts for me, ran too many trips to Home Depot and IKEA for me, did the heavy lifting, and installed the chandelier. It was truly a team effort and I couldn’t be happier with how it all came together!
- We added traditional casing to all windows
- Installed white vertical board & batten to the whole space
- Madeover vintage china cabinet
- Madeover large terracotta planter
- Printed and framed large free museum art download for inexpensive oversized art.
- Installed curtains
- Installed light fixtures
- Built out faux built-in desk and shiplap feature
